There are things, appearance of which doesn’t hurry to change even after the expiration of many centuries. So we can say about a bottle of wine, ornaments and some kinds of furniture. Furniture made of natural wood is still in brisk demand. There are many reasons for that, but we are not going to discuss it now. Let’s talk about the ways of looking after furniture made of wood taking wooden desks as an example.
It’s necessary to trouble about the conditions, in which your desk will be. First of all, it is normal humidity and temperature. The more stable climate in the room will be, the better. Too high humidity, as well as too dry air, can damage your desk irreparably. It’s even worse if your furniture undergoes the influence of big humidity and temperature differences. Of course, different types of wood have different resistance to such influences. I should mention, that sometimes even very hard types of wood can warp, if the desk stands in the immediate proximity to a fireplace or other source of heat.
One should also pay attention, whether direct sunlight often appears on the desk or on any of its parts. The situation is, that under the influence of ultra-violet rays, which are contained in the sunlight, both the wood itself, and the desk’s covering can change their color. It will be even more unpleasant, if it happens with just one part of the desk.
It happens that wood can be damaged by small beetles. They gnaw long narrow passages through the wood. If you have seen small holes on the desk’s surface, out of which spills yellow dust, you should buy any means against such beetles.
Wipe your desk with a soft clean cloth, a little bit damped with antistatic means. The cloth shouldn’t be wet, as otherwise the desk can lose its brilliance. Consult a shop-assistant and find the means for looking after the furniture, which will better do for your desk.
If the desk’s polishing has lost its brilliance, one can try to restore it with the help of special means for restoring desk’s polishing. However, you shouldn’t use it too often. Once in three or four months is a good idea. One can polish small scratches with a pasty wax. If there is a sign from a cup with hot coffee on the desk’s polishing, you can remove it, having polished this place with the mixture of alcohol and vegetable oil in equal parts.
You should protect your desk from water and other liquids. Some means, used for cleaning, contain chemical substances, which can easily spoil the outward appearance of a wooden desk. Take care of your desk and it will serve you for many years, preserving its wonderful condition.
